John O'Hagan

John O'Hagan is an award-winning commercial and film director.

 

He was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in Dayton, Ohio and Washington DC. He studied film and photography at Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, and New York University. He worked as an assistant/intern to Spike Lee, Todd Haynes, David Byrne, and Milos Forman.

 

O'Hagan began making short films at the age of 20. His short film, Five Spot Jewel, won Best Short at several film festivals. His feature documentary film, Wonderland, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, received five Best Documentary film festival awards, a Cable Ace award for Best Documentary, and a nomination for the Gotham Open Palm award. O'Hagan was nominated for Best Direction of a Documentary Film by the Directors Guild of America. Wonderland was distributed by HBO.

 

O'Hagan began directing television commercials with Hungry Man Productions in New York and went on to join Ridley Scott's RSA Films in Los Angeles. His commercial work has been distinguished for its wide range, strong visual storytelling, and humor. His first spot, Dial-A-Mattress "Squirrel", won Gold at the Cannes Lions festival. He has since won numerous industry awards including three more Gold Lions, Gold CLIOs, a Grand CLIO, D&AD Pencils, One Show Pencils, and has directed international campaigns for Adidas, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Mercedes, Land Rover, VW, Volvo, Toyota, Microsoft, IBM, Budweiser, Miller, Heineken, Smirnoff, McDonald's, Visa, Samsung. Commercially, he is best known for his Emmy-nominated Outpost.com campaign and his Cannes Grand Prix-nominated EDS "Cat Herders", consistently listed as one of the Top 10 Super Bowl commercials ever made.
